Claremont taxpayers won another victory on Friday, March 11, 2011 when the NH Supreme Court ruled against a revote for the Claremont School District $22.9 Million High School Bond.

Claremont is one of the highest tax cities in NH, and a bond would have even caused more of a burden on the residents. In addition, with the loss of state building aid which was projected at 60% would have added more cost to the taxpayers.

From the beginning, the voters knew best when the vote failed by ONE vote. Yet, the school board decided to petition the superior court for a revote, and it was denied by Judge Mangones. Then, a second time, a motion for reconsideration was filed, and it too was denied on the grounds that an emergency did not exist. Then, the lower court’s decision was appealed to the supreme court. Then, the NH Supreme Court reinforced the lower court’s decision. Most of all, the will of the people prevailed over the legislative body and judicial body.

For anyone who is considering not voting, this is a true lesson that one vote does make a difference. Voting is one of our basic freedoms, and it still matters even when powerful forces try to destroy it.
