“CONCORD, N.H. – New Hampshire’s Statehouse security force doesn’t have the power to hold people for arrest, but a state lawmaker who’s a retired police chief wants to change that.

State Rep. Dan Eaton is proposing giving the half dozen or so unarmed, legislative security officers in the Statehouse complex the power to detain people until police arrive — even people who violate a newly reinstituted ban on carrying weapons into the buildings.

Eaton said Friday he voted against a legislative policy to ban guns in the complex because the security force has no way of enforcing it by detaining someone carrying a gun.”
