{"id":3846,"date":"2017-02-14T05:50:23","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T10:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cnht.org\/news\/?p=3846"},"modified":"2017-11-16T16:21:27","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T21:21:27","slug":"alternate-facts-emerge-on-tx-women-sentenced-to-8-yrs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cnht.org\/news\/2017\/02\/14\/alternate-facts-emerge-on-tx-women-sentenced-to-8-yrs\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternate Facts Emerge on TX Women Sentenced to 8 Yrs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Feb 12, 2017 (Raleigh) \u2014 <\/strong><em>Rosa Maria Ortega\u2019s name made national news, Feb 9, when a Tarrant County, TX. jury found her guilty of vote fraud and (<a href=\"http:\/\/dfw.cbslocal.com\/2017\/02\/09\/grand-prairie-woman-sentenced-to-8-years-in-prison-for-voter-fraud\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to a CBS News website<\/a>) the jury also sentenced her to 8 years in prison.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/10\/us\/illegal-voting-gets-texas-woman-8-years-in-prison-and-certain-deportation.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times report of the trial<\/a> could well have been written by the attorney defending Ms. Ortega, we wondered how the jury could be so enraged at her that they meted out such a harsh punishment; and learned that she deliberately lied on a registration after being told she couldn\u2019t vote as a non-US citizen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sympathetic Victim<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the defense team painted the picture of a helpless woman with a sixth-grade education, they said the laws were too confusing for her.
