{"id":2353,"date":"2012-03-24T15:10:20","date_gmt":"2012-03-24T20:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cnht.org\/news\/?p=2353"},"modified":"2017-11-20T13:36:41","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T18:36:41","slug":"chicanery-in-lee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cnht.org\/news\/2012\/03\/24\/chicanery-in-lee\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicanery in Lee?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Re-count Fixed Everything<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>by Ed Naile<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the tiny, liberal hamlet of Lee, NH, there was a local election.<\/p>\n<p>Adults charged with the task counted the votes, presumably by hand, probably with some type of procedure, and maybe even in the light of day or with the lights on, did a marvelous job.<\/p>\n<p>Check this out:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;LEE \u2014 A recount of ballots for the town selectman race took place Monday evening, resulting in slightly different vote counts than previously reported by town officials.<\/p>\n<p>However, the different vote counts did not affect who won the election.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fosters.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20120323\/GJNEWS_01\/703239933\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lee recount reveals different tallies but same winner<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And as usual the local paper covered for the whole event &#8211; with great spin.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what I see from reading a few facts, as reported.<\/p>\n<p>In an election for selectman there was a re-count requested \u2013 anonymously?<\/p>\n<p>The original difference in votes for the top two candidates was &#8211; 15.<\/p>\n<p>Now that in itself is close enough to ask for a recount, right?<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cre-count\u201d was held and the numbers changed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>After the re-count the difference between the top two of the three candidates was \u2013 4, and the original winner remained the winner.<\/p>\n<p>Now all that sounds Kosher, except, there were 60 more votes counted in the re-count than were supposedly counted in the first count! Some 578 voters were picked up in the re-count as opposed to 518 in the original count.<\/p>\n<p>How the heck does one find more than 10% of the ballots in a small election were not counted at all in the first count?<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t you think the title of the Fosters story should have been \u201cWhere The Hell Were The 60 Ballots The First Time?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But no, the paper must like the \u201cwinner\u201d so no embarrassing questions were asked.<\/p>\n<p>My congratulations to the Moderator, the big winner in this show.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Re-count Fixed Everything by Ed Naile In the tiny, liberal hamlet of Lee, NH, there was a local election.
