{"id":1096,"date":"2010-04-14T16:30:15","date_gmt":"2010-04-14T21:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cnht.org\/news\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2017-12-19T11:14:57","modified_gmt":"2017-12-19T16:14:57","slug":"cnht-joins-ntu-in-opposing-cigarette-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cnht.org\/news\/2010\/04\/14\/cnht-joins-ntu-in-opposing-cigarette-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"CNHT Joins NTU in Opposing Cigarette Tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, The Coalition of NH Taxpayers joined the Granite State Taxpayers in opposing the NH Legislature&#8217;s potential to hike the cigarette tax by signing on to a letter to the Legislators from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntu.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Taxpayers Union.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The letter from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnht.org\/pdf\/CigTax_4-14.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NTU<\/a> states in part:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;A tax increase on cigarettes is not what New Hampshirites need in the midst of a painful recession. Raising the tax 20 cents now would only further hammer the state\u2019s economy. The National  Association of Convenience Stores reports that cigarettes account for about 33 percent of total sales  nationwide at their establishments. If cigarette taxes rise, the retail price will increase and convenience  stores in New Hampshire will lose business as residents and visitors from border states will buy less.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>CNHT decries the approval of approximately 70 new taxes, fees, or tax hikes that have been imposed upon the citizens of NH since this majority has taken control.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, The Coalition of NH Taxpayers joined the Granite State Taxpayers in opposing the NH Legislature&#8217;s potential to hike the cigarette tax by signing on to a letter to the Legislators from the National Taxpayers Union.
