The man who derailed the 2004 Senate campaign of former state Sen. Burt Cohen, D-New Castle, pleaded guilty to a federal charge of filing false campaign reports.

Jesse Burchfield, 32, disappeared shortly after the Federal Election Commission began asking about discrepancies in Cohen’s campaign finance reports. At one point, there was approximately $200,000 in campaign funds unaccounted for.

The questions raised by the federal investigation took Cohen out of the race against incumbent Judd Gregg, and Democrats were forced to go with 94-year-old activist Doris “Granny D” Haddock.

Haddock lost to Gregg by 30 percentage points.
